The Gentle Heart of the Lamb

Why Jesus is called the Lamb of God, and an easy way to share it with your kids this Easter.

Ask a three-year-old to draw a hero and you'll get muscles, capes, maybe a lion. Almost nobody draws a lamb. Yet that's the picture God chose.

Easter tells the story of a love so deep it chose the path of a lamb. The world often looks for power in strength. Jesus showed a different kind of authority: the power of surrender.

A promise of peace

On the night of the first Passover, every family in Israel chose a lamb without blemish (Exodus 12:5). God told them, The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are (Exodus 12:13). That night, God passed over every home marked by the lamb.

When Jesus came, He fulfilled what that lamb pointed to. He didn't come to demand. In His own words, He came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

The ultimate gift

One day John the Baptist saw Jesus walking toward him and saw more than a teacher. He said:

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

John 1:29

That one sentence changed everything. Peter later wrote that we were rescued with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot (1 Peter 1:19). Jesus took our place and gave His perfect life, so that through faith we have peace with God (Romans 5:1).

Embracing the Lamb

When we look at the Lamb, we find:

  • HumilityA King who serves with a gentle hand.
  • HopeA sacrifice that covers every sin with grace.
  • HealingA love that mends what we can't fix on our own.

Try it at home

Share it with your kids in 10 minutes

  1. Color together. Pick the "Jesus Loves You!" page from The Little Lamb's Big Miracle. While you color, ask: "Why do you think Jesus is called a lamb?"
  2. Say it like John. Read John 1:29 out loud, then let your child point and shout, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
  3. Meet the Shepherd. Read John 10:11: I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Jesus is both: the Shepherd who cares for us and the Lamb who gave Himself for us.

This Easter, share this beautiful truth with your children. Teach them about the Shepherd who became a Lamb to bring them home, and let The Little Lamb's Big Miracle guide those moments together, from the palm parade to the empty tomb.
